History! Field Hockey Earns First-Ever Victory Behind Geaglone’s Game-Winner at Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The University of New Haven Field Hockey team made history on Tuesday afternoon, downing the Mercy College Mavericks, 3-2 for the program's first ever victory. The victory was a total team effort, as three different Chargers found the back of the net to seal the win.

It took only nine minutes for the Blue and Gold to get on the board, as freshman Reilly Bialko (Shickshinny, Pa./Northwest Area) hit the top left of the cage with a penalty stroke goal for her first of the season. The Chargers doubled the lead, as Rider drove in a shot just inside the circle after a foul in the 25th minute. Mercy stormed back however as Alicia Williams buried two goals within five minutes, tying the game just before the midway point.

New Haven opened up the momentum, as the Chargers caused two penalty corners before Geaglone took two shots, but was unable to convert to keep the score knotted. After the Blue and Gold had another penalty corner in the 66th minute, Geaglone ripped home her second goal of the season from the top left of the arc, giving New Haven a 3-2 advantage. Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) stopped one last Mercy opportunity a minute later, before New Haven took its last possession and was able to run out the clock with a penalty corner in the final minute.

Despite Mercy taking the edge on total shots, 19-11, New Haven tallied nine shots on goal. Shaker made 14 stops in the cage, and New Haven had the advantage on penalty corners, 11-9.

The Chargers look to build further on Friday, October 5 for an NE10 game at Franklin Pierce. Game time at Sodexo Field is slated for 6:00 pm. For fans who are unable to attend, live stats and video will be available on the Charger Sports Network.
