WEST HAVEN, Conn.- Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran) scored her fourth goal of the season but the University of New Haven field hockey team fell short, 6-1, to No. 5 Stonehill Skyhawks under the lights on Saturday night.
The Skyhawks got on the board quickly, scoring within the first five minutes of action, but the Chargers would not let up. The first opportunity for New Haven came off a penalty corner ass Taylor Geaglone (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) was able to get a shot off but it was blocked. A foul by the Skyhawks defense provided the Chargers with another opportunity to score as Julia Battino (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) took the penalty stroke, but was unable to convert as it missed wide left. The defense continued to stay strong, and was able to hold Stonehill to three goals in the first half.
The Chargers responded to an early second half goal by the Skyhawks with a goal of their own as Rider drove in a ball from the top of the arc which found the back of the net. Stonehill would add to their lead, scoring two more second half goals.
The Blue and Gold ended the game with five offensive corners. Battino was able to take a shot off the first corner that was blocked by the Skyhawks defense. Reilly Bialko (Shickshinny, Pa./Northwest Area) also took a shot off a penalty corner that missed wide right.
In goal, Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) had 14 saves on the night, with one of her saves coming off a penalty stroke. Additionally, the defense killed 10 out of 12 total penalty corners on the night.
The Chargers return to action on Tuesday, October 23 when they host Molloy for a non-conference matchup. Game time is slated for 7:00 pm at DellaCamera Stadium. For fans who are unable to attend, live stats and live video will be available on Charger Sports Network.
