Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Rider Strikes Again, Field Hockey Falls to Molloy, 3-1

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Despite an early second half goal from Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran), the University of New Haven Field Hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision in non-conference action against Molloy on Tuesday night.

The Chargers had the first opportunity on the night as Morgan McCarty (Uxbridge, Mass./Uxbridge) had the first shot for the Blue and Gold but just missed wide left. New Haven had another opportunity off of the first penalty corner as Reilly Bialko (Shickshinny, Pa./Northwest Area) took a shot that was saved and McCarty had the rebound but missed wide right. On the other end of the field, the defense was resilient throughout the first half, only allowing seven shots and one penalty corner. Goalkeeper Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) made four saves in the opening stanza to keep the game scoreless.

Coming out of halftime, the Chargers got on the board quickly as Rider scored on a shot from the top of the arc in the first minute of the second half.  The Lions answered in the 49th minute with a goal of their own as Ellyn Byrnes scored off of a rebound to tie the game at one apiece. Molloy would take the lead a minute later, as Ellyn Byrnes once again found the back of the net, and would add an insurance goal to secure the victory.

Shaker made a total of 14 saves on the night, and helped the defense kill off all eight penalty corners faced.

Up next for the Chargers is a road trip to Manchester, New Hampshire to take on the Saint Anselm Hawks in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup. Game time is slated for 1:00 pm.
