MANCHESTER, N.H. - Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) made 12 saves in goal and the offense registered five shots, but the University of New Haven field hockey team fell to Saint Anselm on the road, 6-0.
The Hawks didn't waste any time, getting on the board early with a goal in the first minute of play. They would add to their lead with another goal five minutes later. Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran) had the first opportunity for the Chargers with that initial shot in the coming 16th minute but it missed wide. Rebecca Collentine (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) had another chance but couldn't convert as her shot was blocked.
The Chargers defense held their ground for the majority of the first half, not allowing the Hawks to score off five penalty corners. A goal in the 33rd minute extended Saint Anselm's lead to three right before halftime.
Saint Anselm continued to be an attacking force in the second half, registering 18 shots and converting on three more, but Shaker did not give in, making nine saves in the second frame. The defense did not allow the Hawks to score off of six penalty corners in the second half to kill off all 11 penalty corners faced on the afternoon.
On the attacking side, New Haven had one offensive corner in the second half where Jessica Valentino (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Arlington) was able to get a shot off but it was blocked. Amy Baldwin (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) followed that with a shot of her own but it was also blocked. Taylor Geaglone (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) had another opportunity for the Chargers in the 65th minute but was unable to convert as her shot was saved.
Up next for the Chargers is a trip to Worcester, Mass. to take on Assumption for a Halloween game on Wednesday, October 31. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
