Perez-Gomez Scores in Men's Soccer Defeat at Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Universty of New Haven men's soccer team returned to the pitch on Wednesday evening, falling to a tough Merrimack Warriors, 3-1.

Merrimack, who spent much of the 2018 season in the United Soccer Coaches top-25 poll, had the edge on shots, 10-7. Sophomore Justin Dansereau (Billerica, Mass./Central Catholic) got the start in goal, making just two saves on the night.

It was a defensive game for each team, particularly in the first half when each team posted a combined six shots. New Haven had two opportunities to take the lead in the ninth minute, as freshman Alvaro Ezpeleta (Vigo, Spain/Colegio Amor de Dios) had his shot blocked before junior Pablo Perez-Gomez (Medellin, Columbia/West Haven) sent his shot into the hands of goalkeeper Tyler Packett.

After a scoreless first half, Merrimack's Lars Sund blasted a free kick 28 yards out, taking a 1-0 Warrior lead in the first play of the second stanza. The Blue and Gold answered within ten minutes, as Perez-Gomez connected on his second goal of the season for the equalizer. The Charger defense held strong fighting three shots and two corner kicks in a 15-minute span, however a header goal by Mirko Nufi proved to be the game-winner for Merrimack in the 78th minute. The Warriors put the game away in the final three minutes, adding one final goal in the 88th minute.

The Blue and Gold will look to bounce back on Saturday, October 6 for a Northeast-10 matchup versus Saint Anselm. Kickoff at Kathy Zolad Stadium is slated for 4:00 pm. For fans who are unable to attend, live stats and video will be available on the Charger Sports Network.
