WEST HAVEN, Conn.
– The University of New Haven men's soccer team dominated the offensive end for a full 110 minutes, but settled for a scoreless draw against the Saint Anselm Hawks on Saturday, October 6 at Kathy Zolad Stadium.

For the match, shots finished in favor of the Blue and Gold, 20-5, including nine of those shots in the second half. During the final 65 minutes, the Charger defense limited the Hawks to just two strokes.

Senior Abdullah Alamoudi (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia/Arafat) played a nice match for the Chargers, racking up a team-high six shots, including three on goal. Freshman Alvaro Ezpeleta (Vigo, Spain/Colegio Amor de Dios) tallied four shots, while graduate student Simao Sousa Branca (Porto, Portugal/Colegio Luso Internacional do Porto), sophomore Estanislao Desseno (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Saint Patrick College) and graduate student Kledis Capollari (Pogradec, Albania/Guilderland) each had one shot on goal. Junior goalkeeper Stefano Lorusso (Auckland, New Zealand/Sacred Heart College) made two saves in between the pipes.

The Chargers had all the momentum for nearly the entire match, however could not capitalize on several offensive opportunities. Hawks keeper Jacob Rostkowski made two-straight stops toward the end of the first half to keep the Chargers off the scoreboard, before opening the second stanza with a third save on a header shot by Alamoudi. Alamoudi added three more strikes over the next ten minutes and Saint Anselm had a shot hit the crossbar in the 54th minute to remain level at zero. New Haven had perhaps its best opportunity of the match late in the second frame on a free kick from about 30 yards out, but Desseno's shot went just left of the target. Capollari had one last chance for the Blue and Gold before extra time but had his shot saved by Rostowski.

The first overtime went back and forth for the first six and a half minutes, as Ezpeleta's header shot went just high on a corner kick fed by Desseno. In the 99th minute, it was Alamoudi once again for New Haven going for the win, but a fine piece of goalkeeping by Rostowski sent the match into a second overtime period. New Haven continued pressing into the final stanza with three total shots and two corner kicks, but the effort fell short as the clock expired.

The Chargers return to action on Tuesday, October 9 for an NE10 contest againt the Southern New Hampshire Penmen. Match time at Penmen Stadium is slated for 7:00 pm, and for fans who are unable to attend, live stats and video are available on the Charger Sports Network.
