Women's Tennis Rolls to 4-1 Win Over Saint Michael's

COLCHESTER, Vt. – The University of New Haven women's tennis team increased its overall mark to 5-2 on Saturday, edging out the Saint Michael's Purple Knights, 4-1 in Northeast-10 action at the Saint Michael's Tennis Courts in a match shortened due to rain.
 
New Haven gained a one-point advantage following doubles action, sweeping all three courts on the day. Graduate Student Laura Fermosel (Colmenar Viejo, Spain/ÍES Rosa Chacel) and sophomore Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) improved to 6-1 in dual matches, topping Abby Ramsay and Margaret de Point, 6-2 at the No. 1 court. Second flight doubles saw sophomore Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) and Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) downing Brittany Katz and Melissa Wood for their fifth dual match win, while junior Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) and classmate Angela Mercurio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip) toppled Katie Kosta and Annie Serkes, 6-0 to improve to 3-0 at No. 3 doubles.
 
Mika increased her No. 4 dual match singles record to 6-1 with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 win over Wood. Earning the next point for the Blue and Gold was Rodriguez at No. 3 singles, who picked up a 6-4 win in the first set before blanking Katz in the second frame, 6-0. Earning the final win for New Haven was Fermosel, who played a three-set match with Ramsay at No. 1 singles, not allowing a game in the first set, before falling in the second, 6-3. Fermosel capped off her fifth dual match win of the season, battling to a 6-3 victory in the deciding set.
 
Clyne and senior Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) were also playing well at No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively, however both matches were unfinished due to rain.
 
New Haven returns to action tomorrow, Sunday October 7, at Franklin Pierce in Rindge, N.H. Match time is slated for 12:00 pm.
