Women's Tennis Completes Weekend Sweep with 4-0 Shutout of Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. – The University of New Haven women's tennis team came out on top in its fifth of the last six matches on Sunday afternoon at Franklin Pierce, blanking the Ravens, 4-0 in Northeast-10 action.
 
For the second-straight match, the Blue and Gold swept all three courts in doubles play, as graduate student Laura Fermosel (Colmenar Viejo, Spain/ÍES Rosa Chacel) and sophomore Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) increase their No. 1 dual match doubles mark to 7-1 with a 6-1 victory over Alana Wyatt and Brigid Washburn. Sophomore Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) and Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) elevated their No. 2 doubles mark to 6-2, winning a hard-fought match over Sarah Rich and Grayson Lacroix, 7-6 (7-4). Junior Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) and junior Angela Mercurio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip) improved to a perfect 4-0 at No. 3 doubles with their second-straight shutout, a 6-0 victory over Kelly O'Donell and Shelli Salran.
 
New Haven earned three more points in singles action, playing only to clinch the match due to rain. Rodriguez earned the first singles point for the Blue and Gold at the No. 2 court, leveling out her dual match singles record to 4-4 with a dominant 6-1, 6-4 victory over Lacroix. Mika played her first career-match at No. 3 singles, defeating Rich, 6-1, 6-2 to increase her overall dual match singles record to 7-1, with those seven singles wins checking in at a team-high. Gonzalez returned to No. 1 singles for the first time this season, clinching the match for the Chargers with a 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 4-0 victory to earn a win by forfeit.
 
Following the weekend-sweep on the road, New Haven will return back to West Haven for an NE10 match against the Assumption Greyhounds. First serve at the University of New Haven tennis courts is slated for 4:30 pm.
