Men's Basketball Downs LIU Post 74-43 in 2018-19 Season Opener

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The University of New Haven men's basketball team opened its 2018-19 campaign on Wednesday night, earning a 74-43 road victory over the East Coast Conference's LIU Post. Leading the Chargers on the night was freshman Kian Dalyrimple (Dix Hills, N.Y.), the only Charger in double figures with 12 points.

Overall, 11 different players scored for the Chargers, with none scoring under three points in the game. As a team, New Haven shot 42.6 percent from the field, connecting on 29-of-68 field goal attempts, including 13 from beyond the three point arc. Dalyrimple and Darius Roundtree (Plainfield, N.J./The Patrick School) led from long range, each finishing with a trio of three point field goals.

Joining the rookie in leading the Blue and Gold was Roundtree with nine points, while senior Najee Larcher (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian), freshman Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J. /Trenton Catholic Academy) and redshirt sophomore Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) all chipped in eight points. Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) followed with seven points. Lane came within striking distance of a triple double in his first game wearing a Charger uniform as he added eight rebounds and seven assists to his tally.

Larcher closed out the night with a team-best 10 rebounds and three blocks, while as a team, New Haven held an impressive 43-37 margin on the boards. The three blocks from Larcher were part of eight total for the Chargers, while the Blue and Gold compiled 21 assists on its 29 total buckets.

Defensively, New Haven held the Pioneers to just 29 percent shooting from the field, including a minimal 11 percent from beyond the three point arc. Alonzo Ortiz-Traylor, the lone returning player on the Pioneers roster, led all players in the game with 22 of LIU Post's 43 total points.

New Haven will return to the hardwood on Saturday afternoon when they make their debut at Charger Gymnasium, hosting the Adelphi Panthers in the NE10 Conference opener.
