Chargers Storm Past Nyack 71-41

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's basketball team stormed out on a 21-0 run to start the game and never looked back, taking down Nyack 71-41 on Saturday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium. Five players scored in double figures for New Haven with senior Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) leading the team with 13 points, eight rebounds and a career-high seven assists. Senior Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy), junior Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) and freshman Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) all tallied 12 points each, while senior Allieyah Cubbage (North Plainfield, N.J./Roselle Catholic) added 11 points and seven rebounds. Wormack shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and rejected two shots, while DeBose went 5-of-7 from the field. Kerr and Cubbage added four steals each.

New Haven finished the game shooting 48.1 percent from the floor (26-for-54) and outscored the Warriors 40-12 in the paint and 28-14 off turnovers. New Haven now sits at 8-4 on the season while Nyack drops to 2-9.

"One of our goals was to come out fast out of the gate," said head coach Deborah Buff. "We shared the ball very well and made the extra pass. We played really good defense and our shots were falling. I was just really happy with the morale coming off the long break."

FIRST QUARTER

·         The Chargers scored the first 21 points of the game, holding a shutout over the first 6:17 of the contest.

·         DeBose hit two early three-pointers, and Wormack added two buckets to take a 14-0 lead just over three minutes in, forcing a Nyack timeout.

·         Kerr followed with seven straight points, including a triple to make it 21-0 at the 4:28 mark.

·         Nyack scored six of the next eight points before Cubbage scored the last five points of the frame to make it 28-6 after one.

·         The Chargers shot a sizzling 73.3 percent in the opening quarter, connecting on 11 of their 15 field goals.

SECOND QUARTER

·         DeBose opened the second by growing the lead to a game-high 24 points with a layup.

·         Nyack would get no closer than 21 following a free throw with 3:26 left until halftime.

·         Wormack grew the lead to a half-high 25 with a layup at 2:17 to make it 42-17, as the Chargers carried a 42-19 lead into the break.

·         New Haven outscored Nyack 21-19 to close the half following the 21-0 burst to open the game.

THIRD QUARTER

·         New Haven came out of the locker room strong once again, rattling off 14-straight to begin the third quarter.

·         Oge scored six straight points to make it 56-19, capping the stretch with a fastbreak bucket off a steal by Cubbage.

·         Nyack hit a free throw at the 1:48 mark of the third, ending a scoreless stretch that lasted 8:35, to make it 56-20.

·         Aliyah Christy (Stratford, Conn./King Low Heywood Thomas) tacked on a free throw to end throw quarter and give New Haven a 57-22 lead after three, as the Chargers held Nyack to just three points and 0-for-14 from the floor.

FOURTH QUARTER

·         Nyack outscored New Haven 19-14 over the final 10 minutes, forcing 11 Charger turnovers.

·         Nyack scored five straight points to get within 66-37 with 2:39 remaining, but Nadia Mirich (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) and Christy combined for five free throws over the final two minutes to help the Chargers to the 30-point win.

"We got everybody in and had five players score in double figures, which is how we win games," Buff said. "Our goal these past couple games has been to play four quarters, and I thought we did that this game. I'm really glad that we followed our scout, played with energy and that we're 8-4."

The Chargers will have a quick turnaround and take the floor tomorrow for the final time in 2018 with a matchup at Goldey-Beacom. Tipoff is at 5 p.m. on the CACC Network.
