MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The University of New Haven baseball team's offense continued to overpower its opponents on day two of the Northeast Challenge, as the Chargers knocked in 32 runs on 33 hits in two victories on Saturday at the Ripken Experience. New Haven dominated in game one over Concordia (N.Y.) with a 22-2 win and finished off Queens (N.Y.) in the later game, 12-2. Over the first three games, the Blue and Gold is outscoring its opponents, 44-4. In addition, the 22 runs scored against Concordia were the most scored for the Chargers since defeating Molloy in the 2007 season, 26-3.
Junior
PJ Contreras (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) and senior
Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester) each finished with five hits on the day, with Contreras going 5-for-7 at the dish with two doubles, a home run and five RBI with four runs scored. Caico also had two doubles and smacked a bases-clearning triple in game one. Sophomore
Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) drove in six total runs on four hits with a home run and five runs scored. Also finishing with multiple hits on the day was graduate student
Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) who had four hits, two for extra bases, graduate student
Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) and junior
Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) and sophomore
Billy Huber (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge). As a pitching staff, New Haven posted a 1.50 ERA over the two games and struck out 17 total batters.
Game One: New Haven 22, Concordia (N.Y.) 2
Chamberlain had a day in game one, going 3-for-5 with two walks, five RBI and three runs scored. New Haven got out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first before shutting the Clippers down, 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first. The Chargers batted around in the top of the second, scoring six runs while taking advantage of four Concordia errors in the field. Contreras hit a no-out double to score freshman
Rob Giovanelli (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) and Garcia to keep the scoring going before loading the bases with one out. Caico came up to bat and knocked everyone home to force a premature Knight pitching change.
Concordia got all the offense it would get in the bottom of the second with two runs scored, but it was not enough to harm New Haven. With an eight-run lead, Chamberlain homered for his second time in as many days, blasting a two-run shot in the top of the fifth. New Haven had another big inning in the top of the seventh with six runs on four hits and added two more in the eighth to extend the win to 20 runs.
On the mound, freshman
Izaiya Mestre (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) got his first collegiate win, tossing 5.0 innings with four strikeouts. Senior
Brandon Cruz (Brentwood, N.Y./St. Anthony's), junior
Alexander Hyman (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township), sophomore
Brendon Malouf (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) pitched the final four innings and did not surrender a hit against the Clippers. Hyman also struck out one batter in his one inning of work.
Enrico Locaseio got the start for the Clippers and suffered the loss after giving up eight runs in 1.2 innings pitched.
Game Two: New Haven 12, Queens (N.Y.) 2
For the third-straight game, New Haven wasted no time getting started, plating a run in the first inning with Chamberlain scoring on a fielder's choice and throwing error. After plating another run in the second, New Haven kept the rally going with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the third. Garcia punched an RBI single that scored Caico, and Contreras went yard for a two-run shot before New Haven added another run to take a 6-0 lead at the bottom of the third.
Freshman
Andrew Cain (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had his first collegiate hit in the fourth inning, a two-RBI single to score Caico and Zagaja. In the meantime, senior
Tim Kennedy (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) was dealing out the mound with a no-hitter through four innings before Queens finally got on the board with a solo home run to start the fifth. The Chargers capped off the win by adding a run in the sixth and seventh innings as the Blue and Gold improved to 3-0 on the season.
Kennedy got his first win of the season, improving to 10-0 in his career behind a solid 6.0 inning effort with seven strikeouts. Sophomore
Brandon LaManna (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West), and seniors
Colin Keyes (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) and
Kellen Croce (Cheshire, Conn./Gunnery School) all got an inning and did not give up a run. LaManna tossed three strikeouts, while Croce fanned two of his three batters faced.
Cameron Burt got the loss for the Knights, giving up the first run of the game in his 0.2 innings pitched.
New Haven returns to action tomorrow, Feb. 25, for the final game of the Northeast Challenge. First pitch at the Ripken Sports Complex is slated for 12:00 pm.
