No. 23 Baseball Shuts Down No. 18 Southern New Hampshire in Top-25 Matchup, 10-2

LANTANA, Fla. – The No. 23 nationally ranked University of New Haven baseball team battled back from a 2-0 deficit to eventually take control over No. 18 Southern New Hampshire (9-3) for a 10-2 victory in a non-conference game Sunday evening at the Santaluces Complex. The Chargers remain unbeaten on the season with an unblemished 9-0 record, marking the first time that New Haven kicked off the season with a 9-0 record since the 1995 season when the team went 18-0 to start the year under head coach emeritus Frank Vieira in his 33rd season.

For the seventh time this season, New Haven posted at least 10 runs against its opponent, also tallying six hits against the Penmen. Senior Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester) led New Haven at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Graduate student Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) and junior PJ Contreras (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) each had one hit and one RBI and freshman Rob Giovanelli (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) also had one hit, a ground rule double in the fifth. Sophomore Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) was also effective, drawing three walks with a stolen base and two runs scored.

On the mound, senior Tim Kennedy (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) tossed 5.0 innings with five strikeouts, improving to 3-0 on the season and an unblemished 12-0 on his career. Southern New Hampshire's Mitchell Powers suffered the loss, falling to 1-1 on the season with 4.0 innings pitched while surrendering two earned runs.

Southern New Hampshire got all the offense it could get in the first inning, plating two runs on a no-out single by Ryan Sullivan before Kennedy pitched three-straight outs to put an end to the first frame. Each team went scoreless for the next three innings before New Haven took the lead, plating three runs on three hits in the top of the fifth. The Chargers added two runs an inning later with Walraven stealing home and Caico scoring on a wild pitch.

In the top of the seventh, Southern New Hampshire's bullpen struggled to find the strike zone, as New Haven scored three runs thanks to three walks, a hit batter and wild pitch. By the top of the ninth, the Penmen lost all control as Chamberlain scored on a wild pitch and Caico doubled home Walraven for the Charger's ninth and tenth runs of the game.

Senior Kellen Croce (Cheshire, Conn./Gunnery School) pitched the final two innings for New Haven, retiring all six of his batters while firing two strikeouts.

After a day off, New Haven will face the Caldwell Cougars on Tuesday, March 13. First pitch at the Santaluces Athletic and Aquatic Complex is slated for 11:00 am.
