No. 14 Baseball Sweeps Post on Final Day of Florida Trip

LANTANA, Fla. – The University of New Haven baseball team wrapped up its spring break trip to Florida on Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep over Nutmeg State and regional foe, Post University (8-5). The Chargers (12-0) extend its winning streak to 12 games, the longest streak since the 2006 season when New Haven won 16-straight games.

Senior Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)) finished with a team-high three hits for New Haven, as he went 3-for-5 (.600) at the dish with two runs scored, including the game-winning run in the first game, and also drove in one run. On the bases, Caico was perfect on the day with three out of three swiped bags. In addition, Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) batted .400 on the day with two hits, a double and an RBI single. Junior James Myers (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) and graduate student Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) each had two hits with Myers adding on an RBI and a run scored. Freshman George Pappas (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) made an impact in game two with an RBI single as well.

Game 1: New Haven 1, Post 0

New Haven struggled to get its offense going, but Mestre tamed the Eagles on the mound, not allowing a hit until his final batter of the day in the fifth inning. Mestre retired the side twice, and finished his day with his second-career win, striking out one batter in the process.

In the third inning, New Haven got its best chance to score early on with two walks to lead off the inning before advancing runners to second and third on a sacrifice bunt, however the Blue and Gold could not push them across, recording two-straight outs to end the third.

The Chargers gained momentum in the fourth frame as New Haven turned a 6-4-3 double play before scoring its first and only run of the game in the bottom half of the inning. Caico led off with a single and was moved over by Garcia on a sacrifice bunt. After stealing third, Caico broke on an Eagle passed ball to grasp the 1-0 advantage. Post nearly came back in the top half of the fifth inning, however Chamberlain showed his cannon, gunning down a runner trying to score from second base for the final out of the frame.

Sophomore Brandon LaManna (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) took care of things the rest of the way for New Haven, earning his first-career save, relieving Mestre for 2.0 innings while surrendering only one hit in the process.

Game 2: New Haven 5, Post 0

It was once again a dominating pitching effort in game two, as seniors Will Aldam (Danbury, Conn./Berkshire School) and David Palmer (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) as well as sophomore Brendon Malouf (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) combined for a two-hit shutout with six strikeouts.

The Chargers threatened during their first two at-bats but were unable to push any runs across as they stranded five runners on base. The continued threat finally broke through in the top of the third inning when Walraven singled to lead off the frame. Later in the stanza, Caico put New Haven ahead with a sacrifice fly to right field. Post limited the threat by stranding two runners on base, but it was all the run support the Charger pitching staff needed.

Aldam did not allow a hit until the fourth inning but recovered by inducing a double-play ball and forced a fly-out to retire the side in order. The offense broke the game open in the following at-bat, as New Haven plated four runs on three hits in the top of the fifth. Costly mistakes by the Eagles helped to catapult the rally, as Caico reached on an error and advanced to second on a passed ball, setting up an RBI-single by Garcia to double the Charger advantage.  Pappas and Myers drove in one run each with base hits, and Myers scored on a pickoff attempt to close out the inning, putting the Chargers ahead 5-0.

Aldam, Palmer, and Malouf combined to retire the next eight Eagle hitters, and after a two-out single in the final inning, Malouf forced Connor Kolich to fly out to right field to close out the contest, keeping the Chargers perfect record intact.
