2017 NE10 CHAMPIONSHIP RING CEREMONY PHOTOS
WEST HAVEN, Conn. – A historic run for the No. 7 University of New Haven baseball team (16-1, 1-1 NE10) came to an end on Saturday afternoon, as the Chargers settled for a split in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against the Assumption Greyhounds (7-12, 1-1 NE10) at Vieira Field. New Haven came out on top against the Greyhounds in game one, 4-1, and fell on the second end of the twin bill, 7-5. The Chargers 16-0 start to the season was the best since the 1995 season when the Chargers got off to an 18-0 record, and the winning streak was the longest since the 2006 season when the Blue and Gold also won 16-straight.
Junior
James Myers (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) went 4-for-8 at the dish on the day and also crossed the plate once. Sophomore
Billy Huber (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) had three hits and two RBI, and classmate
Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) notched two hits with an RBI, one run scored and two walks. Driving in three runs was senior
Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)) who also had one stolen base. Freshman
Rob Giovanelli (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) added two hits, one double and one RBI, while junior
PJ Contreras (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) tallied one RBI as well.
Game One: New Haven 4, Assumption 1
Senior
David Palmer (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) continued his impressive pitching with 7.0 solid innings to earn his fifth win of the season, striking out seven in the process without surrendering an earned run. Sophomore
Brandon LaManna (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) earned his second save of the season as he closed out the game with 2.0 innings pitched and two strike outs.
Assumption wasted no time scoring a run in the first inning before New Haven threatened in the bottom half of the first, but left the bases loaded with a strike out. Palmer settled in back on the mound, retiring the next six batters in order, with Caico tying the game on a sacrifice fly to score Huber in the third. Following a scoreless three and a half innings, it was Huber's time to shine, hitting a hard shot back to the pitcher with bases loaded as Contreras scampered home to score the eventual winning run. Palmer finished his day in the bottom of the seventh, retiring the side in order.
Despite a Greyhound pitching change to start the bottom half of the seventh inning, New Haven kept momentum going, plating two runs on two hits to increase the lead to 4-1. Graduate student
Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) singled to right-center field to start the inning off before advancing to second on a failed pick-off attempt. Caico walked and stole second, and Giovanelli successfully scored Zagaja on a suicide squeeze before Caico scored Contreras on a fidler's choice.
Back out on the mound, LaManna retired six of his seven batters faced as New Haven earned its 16
th win of the season.
Game Two: Assumption 7, New Haven 5
Graduate student
Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) and Zagaja each drew a walk in the bottom of the first and eventually scored on a Caico RBI-single to make the score 2-0 early. Following two scoreless innings, the Chargers broke through in the fourth with three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-0 advantage.
Assumption got on the board in the top of the fifth, knocking two extra-base hits to plate a single run to cut the deficit to four runs. Another RBI-double in the sixth put the Greyhounds within striking distance, and the bats continued to deliver in the seventh with four runs thanks to a bases-loaded double by
Derek Adamson.
The Chargers went down in order in the seventh, but had the tying run 90 feet away in the eighth but a two-out foul out down the third-base line ended the threat. Assumption added an insurance run in the top of the ninth to go ahead 7-5 and looked to close out the game in the ninth.
Brendan Desautels came on for the save for the Greyhounds in the ninth and was met with a leadoff single by Chamberlain. Following a strikeout and fly out, Zagaja was hit by a pitch to put bring the winning run to the plate, but New Haven was called out on strikes on a full-count as Assumption held on to hand the Chargers their first loss of the season.

The Chargers will take a quick overnight break before returning back to Vieira Field for the second double header of the weekend against the Merrimack Warriors. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
