No. 16 Baseball Holds off Pace in Midweek Battle, 6-4

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 16 University of New Haven baseball team earned its tenth Northeast-10 win on Wednesday afternoon, holding off the Pace Setters, 6-4, at Frank Vieira Field on another chilly and windy day in West Haven.

Leading the Chargers offense on the day was junior PJ Contreras (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge), who was 2-of-3 at the dish on the day with an RBI double and a walk. Sophomore Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) joined Contreras as the only other Charger who had a multi-hit day, collecting two hits while scoring one run. Five other Chargers also had a base knock, including junior Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) who drove in two runs on an RBI single to right field. Senior Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)) added an RBI single, and graduate student Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) scored twice for the Blue and Gold.

Senior Tim Kennedy (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) (6-1) earned the win on the hill, working through 7.0 innings with six strikeouts while surrendering only one earned run. Lorenzo Russo (0-2) suffered the loss for the Setters with 3.1 innings pitched.

New Haven got its first run early, as Contreras launched a long double to left field, plating Caico to take a one-run lead in the bottom of the second inning. After adding a run on an error two innings later, the Chargers struck again in the bottom of the fifth, extending the lead to 5-0 with three runs on three hits. Chamberlain started off the inning with a bunt single down the third base line and Walraven followed up with a base hit to left, before the two were eventually moved over on a wild pitch, making it easy for Garcia to score the pair on a single to right field.

The Chargers and Setters exchanged runs in the seventh inning, before the Setters ignited a violent comeback in the top of the ninth, scoring three runs on four hits to cut the deficit down to two runs. Senior lefty Kellen Croce (Cheshire, Conn./Gunnery School) entered the game with two outs, pitching the final out to earn his seventh save of the season.

The Blue and Gold is scheduled to play tomorrow, April 19, in a non-conference game against Bridgeport. First pitch at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard is slated for 3:30 pm in Bridgeport.
