No. 15 Baseball Wins Ninth-Straight With 7-2 Victory over Pace

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The No. 15 University of New Haven baseball team (33-6, 15-6) is back on a streak, winning its ninth-straight game against the Pace University Setters (16-18, 10-14) NE10) on Tuesday evening at Finnerty Field, 7-2.

For the third-straight game, graduate student Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) led the Blue and Gold in RBI, driving in two runs off one hit in the first inning, a two-RBI double to right center for the first Charger lead of the game. Four other Chargers knocked an extra-base hit on the day, with junior PJ Contreras (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) sending his third home run of the season over the left field fence followed by sophomore Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford), sophomore Billy Huber (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge), and graduate student Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) who all tallied one double. Along with Huber, senior Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)), junior James Myers (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) and sophomore Dylon Grzenda (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) each collected two hits with Caico, Myers and junior Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) sending home the final run for New Haven.

Senior David Palmer (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) (8-1) threw 7.0 innings on the mound, striking out five Setters while allowing six hits and two earned runs.

For the seventh time out of the last eight games, the Chargers got on the scoreboard in the first inning, as Zagaja cleared the bases with a two-out, two-RBI double to right center field to score Caico and Walraven. After Palmer retired the side in order in the bottom half of the inning, Contreras blasted his third home run of the season, a solo shot to left field, extending the Charger lead to three runs.

After the third and fourth innings saw only one hit between both teams, Chamberlain led off the fifth with a double and scored two batters later despite the Setters turning a double play. Myers added a fifth run on an RBI single to right center in the top of the sixth, before Pace found a groove in their at bats with a two-RBI single up the middle to cut the deficit to three runs.

After Walraven led off the top of the seventh with a double to left field, Garcia drove Walraven home for the sixth Charger run of the game, two innings before Caico added an RBI single in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach for the Setters.

New Haven will finish out the regular season with a three-game series at Adelphi this weekend, May 4 and 5. The Chargers will take on the Panthers at Bonomo Field for a single game on Friday at 3:30 pm before closing out the series with a doubleheader on Saturday at 12:00 pm.
