Record-Breaking Baseball Season Comes to End at NCAA Division II East Region Championships

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – A record-breaking season for the University of New Haven baseball team came to an end on Sunday, as the No. 1 seeded Chargers were eliminated from the NCAA Division II East Region Championships, dropping an elimination game to St. Thomas Aquinas at Peter X. Finnerty Field on the campus of Pace University. Beforehand, the Chargers survived elimination in the first game on Sunday with a 5-4 win over No. 5 Franklin Pierce. Following the conclusion of the game, graduate student shortstop and Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) and freshman designated hitter Rob Giovanelli (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Game 1: No. 1 New Haven 5, No. 5 Franklin Pierce 4

Four different Chargers each had two hits to combine for the entirety of the offense, led by Caico who went 2-for-4 at the plate with a three-run homer over the right field fence in the third inning. Walraven went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and graduate student third baseman Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) and Giovanelli each had two hits. Junior first baseman Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) also had one RBI on a sacrifice fly. Despite going hitless, sophomore Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) drew his 52nd walk of the season, taking over the top spot in base on balls in all of Division II this season. Freshman right-hander Izaiya Mestre (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) earned the win on the mound as he improved to 8-2 on the season, while senior lefty Kellen Croce (Cheshire, Conn./Gunnery School) pitched his tenth save of the season.

Franklin Pierce got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, and held that lead until a heavy rain storm forced a 27-minute delay with Caico at the plate on a 2-0 count. After pitching resumed at 4:13 pm, Caico took a strike and looked at a ball before driving an inside pitch over the right field fence to take a 3-2 advantage. Mestre returned to the mound after not throwing a pitch for nearly 40 minutes, as Octave, his first batter after the delay, homered on a 1-0 count to left center field to tie the score in the top of the fourth. New Haven took the lead again with a Garcia sacrifice fly and Zagaja added another run for in the seventh with an RBI single up the middle.

With the Chargers leading by two in the final frame, Croce came in to attempt his 10th save of the season. The Ravens greeted the southpaw with a lead-off single by Roberto deep in the gap between second base and shortstop. During the following at-bat, Roberto advanced to second on a wild pitch and later moved up another 90-feet on a one-out groundout. Jones made it a one-run game with a two-out single to left field on the first pitch of the at-bat, but Croce eventually struck out sophomore pinch-hitter J.R. Disarcina on three pitches to clinch the 5-4 victory.

Game 2: No. 2 St. Thomas Aquinas 4, No. 1 New Haven 0

Saint Thomas Aquinas got all the offense it would need in the second inning, as a bunt single and two-RBI base hit scored three runs for the Spartans to gain a 3-0 early lead. STAC added another run in the sixth as Michael Morgan homered to right center field to lead off the inning.

For New Haven, four Chargers tallied one hit with Giovanelli leading the way with a double. On the mound, sophomore right-handed pitcher Devon DiMascio (Mansfield, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) suffered the loss, lasting just 1.2 innings in the start, surrendering three earned runs and five walks during the stretch. Senior right-handed pitcher Will Aldam (Danbury, Conn./Berkshire School) added four innings of relief, striking out two batters and freshman right-hander Andrew Cain (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) closed out the game with 2.1 innings, striking out three.

New Haven concludes a historic 2018 season with a 39-12 overall mark, setting a new program record for single-season victories.
