Morello Nets Game-Winner in 89th Minute, Women's Soccer Downs Georgian Court in Season Opener, 3-2

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The University of New Haven women's soccer team opened up the 2018 season with a dramatic win on Thursday, downing the Georgian Court Lions, 3-2, on the campus of Pace University. For the first time in her career, senior Emily Morello (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) tallied two goals, including the game-winner in the 89th minute to elevate the Chargers to victory.

Georgian Court stunned the Chargers just 96 seconds into action, as Erin Wimmer quickly gave the Lions a 1-0 lead. Morello leveled the score just before halftime, as junior Megan Fischer (Seaford, N.Y./Island Trees) cleared the ball away to senior Josette Breeden (Vacaville, Calif./Vanden) who took the ball down at the half way line, and played a perfect through ball to Morello who beat the keeper.

In a back-and-forth affair, Georgian Court took the lead again, finding the back of the net in the 64th minute, before senior Emily Bergold (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) evened the score once again with an unassisted goal where she tucked it just barely underneath the crossbar off of a corner kick by junior Sorcha Ni Bhraonain (Galway, Ireland/Colaiste Cholmcille).

In the 89th minute of action, New Haven won the ball in the middle of the field from a goal kick, when freshman Danielle DesRuisseaux (Amherst, N.H./Bishop Brady) collected the ball and played Morello through for the thrilling game-winning goal.

Sophomore Paige Davis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) played all 90 minutes in goal, collecting six saves between the pipes. Team stats were very similar, as New Haven posted 14 total shots on Georgian Court's seven, but Georgian Court had the edge on corner kicks, 6-4.

The Chargers are back in action Saturday, September 1 against Post. Kick off will be at 4:00 pm at Pace Stadium in Pleasantville, N.Y.
