Men's Soccer Comeback Bid Falls Short in Overtime Defeat at Southern Connecticut State

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven men's soccer team fought for a full 95 minutes, but fell just short in a tough contest against the Southern Connecticut State Owls, 3-2 in overtime at Jess Dow Field on Tuesday.

It was a very emotional contest, as the match featured 48 combined fouls and five yellow cards. Despite the defeat, New Haven was strong on the offensive end, matching a season-high in shots and shots on goal with 17 and eight, respectively.

Freshman Alvaro Ezpeleta (Vigo, Spain/Colegio Amor de Dios) led the charge with five total shots including two on goal, while classmate Francisco Guedes (Lisbon, Portugal/Maristas de Carcavelos) tallied four. Graduate student Enrique Barboto (Tampa, Fla./Steinbrenner) put all three of his shots on target and racked up a team-high three points on the night behind a goal and an assist. Sophomore Alessandro Pappalardo (Rome, Italy/Stamford) found the back of the net with his only shot attempt of the evening during the 40th minute.

Neither side found the target with a shot attempt during the first 13 minutes until Southern Connecticut State's Ignasi P. Cererols drove a free kick into the lower right corner of the frame to give the Owls an early 1-0 lead. Southern Connecticut's perfect shooting percentage continued during the 20th minute when Cererols found Devante Teixeira who fit a left-footed shot under junior Stefano Lorusso (Auckland, New Zealand/Sacred Heart College) to extend the lead to 2-0.

Moments later, the Chargers threatened with two shots on goal, including one of a corner kick, though both attempts were turned away by Owl goalkeeper Bailey Bassett. After another save by Bassett, New Haven finally broke through when Barboto found Pappalardo inside the box for his second goal of the season, cutting the deficit in half before halftime.

Having been dealt a yellow card during the first half, Bassett was assessed his second yellow card of the evening, giving New Haven an opportunity during the 54th minute with a penalty kick. Barboto buried the attempt to level the scoring as momentum appeared to have shifted in favor of the Chargers.

Three more shot attempts found the target for New Haven during the final 26 minutes, but the Chargers could not break the goal line as the two teams headed to overtime tied 2-2.

New Haven's hopes of snapping a nearly 34-year winless drought against Southern Connecticut State were dashed early in the extra period. It took just 5:38 for Cererols to net his second goal of the night to give the Owls the 3-2 victory.

The Chargers will face another tough test on Saturday, September 15 against the NE10 defending champions, the No. 6 nationally ranked Merrimack Warriors. Match time at Martone-Mejail Field is slated for 7:00 pm. For fans who are unable to attend, live stats and video will be available at www.NewHavenChargers.com.
