WEST HAVEN, Conn. –
It was an exciting evening for the University of New Haven men's soccer team, as the team earned its first victory of the 2018 season and scored six goals for the first time in three seasons, storming past Adelphi, 6-3 in NE10 action. The win came as the first for the Chargers over the Adelphi Panthers in program history.

In a chippy and emotion-filled match that featured seven yellow cards, the Chargers racked up a half-a-dozen goals on 12 shots on goal for a .500 shot on goal percentage. Senior Aurochit Patnaik (Mumbai, India/St. Benedict's Prep (N.J.)) led the Blue and Gold and scored for the first time in two seasons, as he netted a team-high two goals on six shots on goal. Three other Chargers found the back of the net in the contest, including freshman Alvaro Ezpeleta (Vigo, Spain/Colegio Amor de Dios), graduate student Enrique Barboto (Tampa, Fla./Steinbrenner), and sophomore Alessandro Pappalardo (Rome, Italy/Stamford).

Ball movement was also a key to the victory, as the Chargers recorded four total assists, the most since New Haven scored six goals against Georgian Court in the 2015 season when there were five helpers. Junior Pablo Perez-Gomez (Medellin, Columbia/West Haven) dished out a team-high two assists, while senior Abdullah Alamoudi (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia/Arafat) and Ezpeleta each had one.

Earning his first career-win in between the iron was sophomore Justin Dansereau (Billerica, Mass./Central Catholic), who played the full 90 minutes in net with four total stops.

Adelphi needed just under seven minutes to break the match open, before Patnaik leveled the match off a pass from Ezpeleta and shot to the left side of the box and beat the keeper's right foot. After the remainder of the first half went scoreless, Adelphi opened up the second half with a cross that was headed in to re-gain the Panther lead.

After momentum shifted toward the Panthers, the Chargers were able to capitalize off of a defensive miscue by the Panthers, as the Adelphi goalkeeper and defender had a miscommunication, allowing for the Chargers to knot the score at two with an own-goal in the 68th minute. Just 45 seconds later, Perez-Gomez fed a pass to the far side over the entire box, where Patnaik connected on his second goal of the match with a left-footed shot that found the mesh for the 3-2 lead.

Adelphi wouldn't give in and continued the back-and-forth affair, as James Thirstino scored his second goal of the contest 10 minutes after Patnaik scored his second. It seemed as if the Chargers could never pull away, but stayed in the game, taking advantage of a Panther handball inside the box. Barboto took the penalty shot and fooled the keeper, tapping left for the eventual-game winning goal in the 82nd minute.

For the second time during the match, New Haven scored twice in under one minute, as Pappalardo and Ezpeleta added the Chargers fifth and sixth goals of the game just 22 seconds apart. Pappalardo collected a pass from Alamoudi with his back facing the net, and was able to turn and shoot directly in front of the net for his third goal of the season. For the final goal of the contest in the 88th minute, Perez-Gomez crossed the ball to Ezpeleta, who used fancy footwork and chipped a shot over the keeper from about 20 yards out.

New Haven looks to carry the momentum into Saturday, as the Chargers will host the Le Moyne Dolphins at Kathy Zolad Stadium at 3:00 pm for a Northeast-10 conference matchup. Game time is slated for 3:00 pm. For fans who are unable to attend, live stats and video will be available on the Charger Sports Network.
