Women's Soccer Drops Home Opener vs. Southern Connecticut State in Slippery Defensive Battle

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's soccer team endured slippery conditions in its home opener, but eventually fell to the Southern Connecticut State Owls in its home opener on Wednesday evening at Kathy Zolad Stadium.

A steady mist fell throughout the majority of the contest, causing the turf to become extremely wet throughout the match, where both squads struggled with skipping balls. It was a defensive battle for the entirety of the first half as neither team was able to find the scoreboard under the conditions. New Haven kept the Owls off the scoreboard in the 19th minute, blocking two-straight Southern Connecticut shots to keep the match scoreless. The visitors threatened again just over ten minutes later, as Meaghan Kelley took a shot that was stopped by a diving Paige Davis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) before Johanna Wahlen recovered and missed her rebound shot wide left. Just before halftime, senior Emily Morello (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) had a one-on-one opportunity against a charging keeper, but her shot was just off target, missing right. Morello took a big swing on her next strike that was stopped by Tamra Zippin in the 44th minute of play.

Southern Connecticut broke through in the 52nd minute, when an unlucky ball slipped off a New Haven defender and fell at the feet of Wahlen, who was able to beat Davis' right hand to the lower left corner. The Owl defense held strong the rest of the way, as the Chargers were only able to register two more shots for the remainder of the contest.

At the end of 90, Southern Connecticut had the edge on total shots, 16-9. New Haven had the upper hand on corner kicks with seven, also limiting the Owls to two corner opportunities.

With the defeat, New Haven slips to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the NE10. Southern Connecticut improves to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the NE10.

The Blue and Gold returns to action on Saturday, September 15 for an NE10 contest against Saint Michael's College. Kick-off at Kathy Zolad Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
