Field Hockey Falls Short at Molloy in First Road Contest

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – The University of New Haven field hockey team struck first, but eventually dropped a non-conference decision to the Molloy Lions on Saturday afternoon by a score of 8-2 at Cedar Creek Park.

The team pounded out 17 total shots on the day, just behind Molloy who finished with 22. New Haven did however finish with the upper-hand on penalty corners, 13-8. In goal, sophomore keeper Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) played all 70 minutes, tallying eight saves.

Three Chargers combined for all 15 of 17 total shots, led by freshman Taylor Geaglone (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) who had six including two on target. Just behind Geaglone was freshman Reilly Bialko (Shickshinny, Pa./Northwest Area) who took five shots and freshman Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran) who had four, including two on goal.

It did not take long for the Blue and Gold to find the back of the net, as freshman Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran) received a pass from freshman Rebecca Collentine (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) and buried her shot for a 1-0 Charger lead just 2:52 into the contest. Molloy leveled the contest exactly five minutes later before adding three more goals by the 22nd minute to increase the score to 4-1. The Chargers cut the score in half four minutes later, as Morgan McCarty (Uxbridge, Mass./Uxbridge) shot to the right corner of the cage after receiving a pass from Geaglone on a goal which started as a penalty corner. The goal was the first of McCarty's career, while Geaglone added to her team high in points, now with three. Molloy added one more goal before half time, increasing the score to 5-2 by the midway point.

For the first 17 minutes of second half, the Blue and Gold held a majority of the momentum, accumulating five shots in the span of 17 minutes, before Molloy stole the momentum back, pushing out three more goals. Within the span, the Chargers caused two additional penalty corners that set up two good chances, however Geaglone's shot was blocked and Bialko's rebound shot went wide. Withi the last three minutes, New Haven caused three penalty corners and had two more shot opportunities, but time expired just as the Chargers picked up additional momentum.

New Haven returns to DellaCamera Stadium on Tuesday, September 18 to begin a stretch of four-straight home games. Game time against the Assumption Greyhounds on Tuesday evening is slated for 7:00 pm. For fans who are unable to attend, live stats and video will be available on the Charger Sports Network.
