Defense Shuts out No. 8 Assumption in First Half, Shaker Shines in 4-0 Setback

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven field hockey team played a hard-fought contest, but fell to the No. 8 Assumption Greyhounds (4-1), 4-0 in a game that was counted as a non-conference contest.

Despite being out-shot 30-5, the Charger defense was exceptional all night long, allowing only four goals to 19 shots on goal to the nationally ranked squad. New Haven limited Assumption to just 11 shots in the first half and did not allow the Greyhounds to score on 14 of 16 penalty corners. In addition to sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Shaker's (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) season-high 13 saves, freshman Reilly Bialko (Shickshinny, Pa./Northwest Area) and junior Ashley Higgins (North Hatfield, Mass./Smith Academy) each came up with big second-half defensive stops.

On the offensive end, freshman Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran) tallied three of New Haven's five shots, including one shot on goal. Freshman Morgan McCarty (Uxbridge, Mass./Uxbridge) put up the additional shot on goal for the Blue and Gold and freshman Taylor Geaglone (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) had one shot as well.

The Chargers had the first offensive opportunity of the contest with a penalty corner, but Geaglone's shot was blocked before McCarty gathered the rebound and was stopped by Assumption's keeper, Sarah Bodzinski. Assumption held the momentum for the remainder of the half, but the Charger defense proved to be too strong for the Greyhounds. Shaker, who was outstanding in goal all night long, made three-straight saves in two minutes, including a huge diving stop on a high shot to her right keep Assumption off the board. The Charger defense continued to fend off the Greyhounds for the remainder of the half, stopping four additional penalty corners in the last seven minutes to mark the score, 0-0 at halftime.

The Greyhounds needed just one and a half minutes to break through in the second half, as an off-target shot was deflected off a New Haven defender for the first goal of the game. That did not put down the defense however, as the Blue and Gold fought off four-straight penalty corners over the next ten minutes, before Assumption added a second goal on a scrum directly in front of the cage in the 46th minute.

After a third goal by Assumption with seven minutes remaining, New Haven saw one of its best opportunities on the night on a penalty corner by Higgins, whose strike directly in front of the cage went in but was called off due to a foul on the shot. Rider had the two last chances for New Haven as her initial shot was saved and rebound shot went just wide left.

The Blue and Gold (0-3) looks to carry its momentum into Saturday, when the squad takes on Saint Michael's for a Northeast-10 conference game at DellaCamera Stadium. Game time against the Purple Knights is slated for 1:00 pm. For fans who are unable to attend, live stats and video will be available on the Charger Sports Network.
