Field Hockey Tripped Up Against Saint Michael's

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven field hockey team's homestretch continued on Saturday, as the Chargers dropped a Northeast-10 conference game to the Saint Michael's Purple Knights, 5-0.

The Purple Knights had the edge on total shots, 18-8. Leading the Chargers on the offensive end was freshman Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran) who tallied five total shots, all five of which were on target. Freshman Taylor Geaglone (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) had two opportunities, and freshman Julia Battino (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) had one shot on goal. As a team, New Haven had the upper edge in penalty corners, 7-3 while in goal, sophomore Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) tallied eight saves.

The Purple knights scored two goals within the first five minutes of action, jumping out to an early lead over the Blue and Gold. After the teams went back and forth on the field for 10 minutes, the Chargers forced three-straight penalty corners within two minutes, as Geaglone had her shot off the corner blocked by a defender. After another corner fed by junior Ashley Higgins (North Hatfield, Mass./Smith Academy), Rider had a good look at the net, but her shot was stopped by the Purple Knights keeper, Anna Hurley. Geaglone had one more shot opportunity in the spurt, but her strike was sent directly into a Saint Michael's defender. Saint Michael's added a third goal in the 33rd minute, before Shaker made three-straight saves just before the midway point.

In the second stanza, New Haven quickly got possession, as Rider opened up the second half with a shot on goal in the first 18 seconds. Saint Michael's quickly took the ball to the other end of the field, adding two more tallies in four minutes to increase the lead to five. New Haven had four more opportunities on penalty corners and was unable to convert, but the defense held strong for the final 27 minutes and did not allow another goal.

The Chargers will next play in its third-straight home game against Adelphi on Wednesday, September 26. Game time at DellaCamera Stadium is slated for 7:00 pm.
