Stonehill Outlasts Women's Tennis in NE10 Battle

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's tennis team was back in action as a full team for the first time in exactly two weeks, but suffered a tough 6-1 defeat to the NE10 defending regular season champion Stonehil Skyhawks on Wednesday.

Capturing the lone point for the Chargers at No. 2 singles was Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina), who defeated Samantha Ormesher with back-to-back 6-4 sets. Gonzalez also teamed up with Laura Fermosel (Colmenar Viejo, Spain/ÍES Rosa Chacel) at No. 1 doubles to defeat Alexandra Vo and Annelisa Howick, 6-4.

In addition, Fermosel played a great match at No. 1 doubles against Vo. The graduate student won the first set by a score of 6-3, before Vo forced a tiebreak with a score of 6-4 in the second set. Even with many successful long rallies and hard-fought points, Fermosel fell just short in the tiebreak, 11-9.

Freshman Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) forced her match to a tiebreak as well, falling in the first set, 6-0 before pulling together a 6-4 set two victory at No. 4 singles against Nicole Downey. Mika went on to drop the tiebreak, 10-6.

The Chargers look to pick things back up at Southern New Hampshire on Saturday, September 22 for an NE10 contest. Match time at the SNHU Tennis Courts in Manchester, N.H. is slated for 11:00 am.
