Women's Tennis Stuns Regionally Ranked So. New Hampshire with 4-3 Victory on Saturday

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The University of New Haven women's tennis team earned a dramatic victory on Saturday afternoon at Southern New Hampshire, edging out the regionally ranked Penmen, 4-3 in Northeast-10 Conference action at the SNHU Tennis Courts. The win for the Chargers was the first in program history against Southern New Hampshire, as freshman Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) earned the clinching point with a tiebreak victory at No. 4 singles for the Blue and Gold.

New Haven gained momentum early in the match by taking command of doubles action, downing the Penmen on all three courts. At No. 1 doubles, graduate student Laura Fermosel (Colmenar Viejo, Spain/ÍES Rosa Chacel) and sophomore Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) improved their doubles record to 2-0 in NE10 action, defeating last year's No. 5 regionally ranked doubles team composed of Anna Sala and Sofia Morais, 6-2. One court over, Mika and sophomore Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) earned their first NE10 victory of the season, defeating Alexxa Etienne and Rachel Wagner, 6-2. Rounding out doubles action was junior Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) and classmate Angela Mercurio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip) who played their first doubles match of the season as a pair, winning a tight 7-5 match at third doubles.

With a 1-0 lead heading into singles play, Fermosel moved back into the win column, improving her overall singles record to 3-2 with a 6-1 win in the first set before sealing the match with a quick 6-0 victory in the second set over Anna Sala. Earning the next point was senior Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches), who improved her overall singles record to 2-1 with her first win of the season at the No. 6 court, earning a convincing win over Abigail Killam, 6-2 and 6-1. With the match tied, 3-3, Mika and opponent Rachel Wagner were the last to finish, with the winner clinching the conference victory for her team. Mika took the first set by a score of 6-1, before just barely dropping the second set, 7-6 (7-2). After bearing down and collecting her composure, Mika battled back to take down Wagner, 6-2 in the tiebreak set to clinch the match and the big regional win.

With the victory, the Chargers improve to 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in the NE10. After a nights rest, New Haven will return to action against the Saint Anselm Hawks, tomorrow, Sunday September 23 for a second-straight NE10 contest. Match time at the New Haven tennis courts is slated for 11:00 am.
