Overtime Goal Spoils Men’s Soccer at Post

WATERBURY, Conn. – Graduate Student Enrique Barboto (Tampa, Fla./Steinbrenner) tied the match, 2-2, with a successful penalty kick at the 88-minute mark, but Post answered with a goal just four minutes into the overtime period to spoil the University of New Haven men's soccer team on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Alessandro Pappalardo (Rome, Italy/Stamford) scored his first goal of the season in the 24th minute to put the Chargers up early, however Post responded with two-straight goals before halftime for a one-goal advantage at the midway point.

New Haven had three solid opportunities to score within three minutes, including a header shot by junior Pablo Perez-Gomez (Medellin, Columbia/West Haven) that hit the crossbar in the 80th minute. Just after Perez-Gomez's header, the Chargers had two-straight corner kick opportunities before Barboto's penalty kick in the 88th minute sent the match into overtime. Post's Sergio Sanchez found the back of the net only four and a half minutes into the extra period for the game-winning strike.

Sophomore Justin Dansereau (Billerica, Mass./Central Catholic) earned his first-career start in goal, accumulating 90 minutes played with four saves.

After a short break, the Blue and Gold returns to action on Wednesday, September 5 at 7:00 pm for a non-conference match at Molloy. Three days later, New Haven will open up at Kathy Zolad Stadium for the first time this season against Saint Thomas Aquinas.
