Men's Soccer Falls in Second-Straight Overtime Match at Molloy

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – The University of New Haven men's soccer team suffered its second-straight overtime defeat, falling to the Molloy Lions, 2-1 at John A. Darcy Field on Wednesday afternoon.

New Haven had the upper-hand on shots for the match, racking up 17 shots compared to the Lions 10. The Chargers defense kept up the great work and allowed only two shots on goal, however both of those shots found the back of the net for Molloy.

New Haven had the early momentum for the match, pounding the Lions with six total strikes in the first 16 and a half minutes, including four-straight shots between the 14 and 16-minute marks. After no legitimate threats for the next 30 minutes, Freshman Francisco Guedes (Lisbon, Portugal/Maristas de Carcavelos) had the last look at the goal before halftime, however his shot was saved in the 43rd minute.

After the first half went scoreless for each team, the Lions opened up the scoring just 1:34 into the second half, as Anthony Cestaro put Molloy on the board with a penalty kick goal after a costly Charger hand ball inside the box. Cestaro nearly doubled Molloy's lead, hitting the crossbar with a shot in the 81st minute. With time against them, the Chargers tied the match with under five minutes in regulation for the second-straight contest, as Guedes sent a cross to senior Abdullah Alamoudi (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia/Arafat) who booted the ball in for his first career goal.

The extra period needed just over four minutes and one shot to determine the winner, as Molloy's Angelo Bordenca hit the match-ending goal in the 95th minute of action.

The Chargers will close out the non-conference schedule and open up the home slate on Saturday, September 8 against Saint Thomas Aquinas. Match time is slated for 7:00 pm, and for fans who are unable to attend, live stats and video will be available.
