WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's tennis team played in its second match in as many days, topping the Saint Anselm College Hawks, 6-1 in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the University of New Haven tennis courts.

For the second-straight match, the Chargers swept doubles action, earning one point toward the team score. At the No. 1 court, graduate student Laura Fermosel (Colmenar Viejo, Spain/ÍES Rosa Chacel) and sophomore Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) improved to 4-0 in dual matches and extended their win streak to three, blanking Tess Malerbi and Kaitlin Hughes, 6-0 for their first shutout of the season as a pair. Sophomore Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) and Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) moved above .500 as a pair, increasing their dual match record at No. 2 doubles to 3-1, taking down Emily Jacy and Lexi Stathis, 6-4. Junior Angela Mercurio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip) and junior Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) battled at No. 3 doubles, narrowly edging out Kayla Hodas and Maikah Bulpitt, 7-6 (7-5) to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Following the conclusion of doubles, Fermosel continued her dominant play at No. 1 singles, cruising past Malerbi, 6-2, 6-0 to improve to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the NE10. Gonzalez (3-3 overall) also played well at second singles, taking the first set 6-1 over Hughes before capping the match with a 6-3 set two. Rodriguez gathered her first conference win of the season at the No. 3 court, defeating Stathis with two-straight 6-2 sets. Freshman Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) improved to 3-1 at No. 4 singles, breezing past Jacy, 6-2, 6-1. Finally, Caitlin Burridge posted a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 6 court, improving to 3-1 on the year and 2-0 at No. 6 singles.

With the victory, New Haven improves to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Northeast-10. The Chargers 3-1 start matches the best since the 2013-14 season when New Haven also went 3-1 to begin the year.

New Haven will look to make it three-straight on September 29 for a Saturday morning match at American International College. First serve at the Forest Park Tennis Courts in Springfield, Mass. is slated for 11:00 am.
