Women's Tennis Blanks American International for Third-Straight Win

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The University of New Haven women's tennis team kept up its hot-streak on Saturday, blanking the American International Yellow Jackets, 7-0 in Northeast-10 action at the Forest Park Tennis Courts. With the win, New Haven improves to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the NE10, matching the best start for the program since the 2013-14 season.

The Chargers got things started early in doubles action, sweeping all three courts, 3-0. Graduate student Laura Fermosel (Colmenar Viejo, Spain/ÍES Rosa Chacel) and sophomore Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) improved to 5-0 in dual matches with a 6-1 triumph over Meri Jimeno-Vicente and Sophie Roberge at the No. 1 court. Freshman Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) and sophomore Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) teamed up for a 6-2 victory over Taylor Pankewicz and Cecelia Salazar, 6-2, for their fourth doubles win of the season at No. 2 doubles, and senior Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) and junior Nicole Calabrese (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) blanked Mireya Ortega and Alice Calabrese, 6-0 at the No. 3 court, improving to 2-1 overall as a pair.

New Haven's dominant performance continued into singles action, particularly at No. 4, 5 and 6 where three Chargers blanked their opponents with back-to-back 6-0 sweeps. Mika, Clyne and Mercurio all did not allow a game against their opponents with Clyne and Mercurio's singles win coming as their first of the season. At the No. 1 court, Fermosel defeated Jimeno-Vicente, 6-1, 6-2, improving to 4-1 in dual matches. Gonzalez moved back into the win column, moving to 3-2 in dual matches with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Salazar. Finally, Rodriguez edged out Roberge, 6-2, 6-0.
