Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Four Chargers Score; Aparicio Nets Game-Winner for Men’s Soccer in 2OT Battle at American International

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The University of New Haven men's soccer team continued Northeast-10 action on Tuesday, as freshman Pedro Aparicio's (Lisbon, Portugal/Liceu de São João do Estoril) first-career goal on a set piece in double overtime lifted the Chargers past American International, 4-3 in an offensive battle at Abdow Field on Tuesday.

Aparicio was one of four Chargers who scored goals on the night, joined by senior Aurochit Patnaik (Mumbai, India/St. Benedict's Prep (N.J.)), who broke open the scoring for New Haven on the earlier side of the first half, junior Nate Peduzzi (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) who scored in the 22nd minute and Alvaro Ezpeleta (Vigo, Spain/Colegio Amor de Dios). Three different Chargers also assisted on three different goals, as Patnaik, graduate student Enrique Barboto (Tampa, Fla./Steinbrenner), and Ezpeleta tallied one helper each on the evening.

In goal, junior Stefano Lorusso (Auckland, New Zealand/Sacred Heart College) earned his first win of the season, playing all 105 minutes in net with six saves on 22 shots faced.

It was a big first half for each team, as the Chargers and Yellow Jackets combined for five goals on 20 total shots in the first 45 minutes of action. American International found the scoreboard in just the fourth minute of action, as Felipe Novelini took a header shot that hit the crossbar and was able to rebound and place his shot past Lorusso for the 1-0 lead. Patnaik scored his third goal of the season on a free kick during the 14th minute to level the scoring at 1-1.

Seven minutes later, New Haven took its first lead of the game, as Ezpeleta sent a diagonal pass to Peduzzi who put his shot home in the 23rd minute. The back and forth affair continued when the Yellow Jackets tied things up once again off of a corner kick exactly two minutes after Peduzzi's goal. Ezpeleta earned redemption less than six minutes later for the Chargers scoring his second goal of the season off a cross from Patnaik to re-gain the lead.

After a high-scoring first half, the second half saw just one goal, scored by American International in the 64th minute to knot the match at three goals a piece. New Haven racked up four-straight corner kick opportunities in the final five minutes of the second stanza, but was able to get only one shot off, as sophomore Estanislao Desseno's (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Saint Patrick College) shot went high just before the match was sent to overtime.

After the first overtime saw only one shot on goal for each team, the Chargers took command of the second period of extra time. The Blue and Gold knocked on the door early with a shot by Peduzzi followed by a header shot by Aparicio that was saved by the Yellow Jacket defense. In the 105th minute, American International received a Yellow card, allowing Barboto to take a free kick from the near side about 40 yards out. Barboto perfectly placed his free kick directly in front of the goal, as Aparicio headed his shot home and New Haven celebrated the 4-3 win.

New Haven, now 2-6 on the season, will return to the pitch on Sunday, September 30 for an afternoon match against Franklin Pierce. Kickoff at Kathy Zolad Stadium is slated for 4:00 pm. For fans who are unable to attend, live stats and video will be available on the Charger Sports Network.
