NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Make it eight straight for the University of New Haven women's volleyball team as they take down the Merrimack Warriors in straight sets (25-18, 25-23, 25-9) on Tuesday night to improve to 6-0 in the Northeast-10 and 15-3 overall. The three set sweep is the ninth time the Chargers have swept an opponent, currently undefeated in three set decisions.
Leading the Blue and Gold on the night was the reigning NE10 Player of the Week Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) who secured her 14th match in double figures with 15 kills. The right side finished the match with a .393 attack percentage taking 28 total attempts and suffering four errors.
Senior setter Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) marshalled the Chargers offense, finishing with 33 assists, while also adding three kills without an error in eight attempts. Rounding out the leading hitters was sophomore Camille Garden (Atlanta, Ga./Landmark Christian) who posted a team-best .600 attack percentage. The middle blocker finished with seven kills and a single error in 10 attempts.
Defensively, senior libero Brianna Mirmina (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) was the lone Charger in double figures as she returned 11 of the Warriors attempts for her ninth straight game with double figure digs. Joining her in leading the defense was Nowicki, Rios and senior defensive specialist Lindsey Kim (Rye Brook, N.Y./Blind Brook) who each finished with eight digs. As a team, the Chargers finished with six total blocks.
New Haven will enjoy a weekend off before returning to action with a non-conference match on Tuesday night at Charger Gymnasium when the LIU Post Pioneers visit West Haven. Opening serve in the regional match-up is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
