Field Hockey Hangs Tough with No. 6 Merrimack in 4-2 Setback

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – It was an impressive homecoming performance for the University of New Haven field hockey team, but the Chargers came up short against the sixth-ranked Merrimack College Warriors on Saturday, Sept. 29, 4-2.

Despite being limited for much of the evening, New Haven took full advantage of its opportunities by finding the back of the cage on each of its two shots on goal during the contest. Freshman Rebecca Collentine (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) scored her first career goal late in the contest and classmate Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran) contributed her second goal of the season. Freshman Julia Battino (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) recorded the only assist for the Chargers.

An all-out performance by the Charger defense limited Merrimack on a night where the nationally-ranked Warriors outshot New Haven, 54-2. Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) made a season-high 22 saves, compiling an .857 save percentage for the evening. The Charger defense was outstanding on penalty corners, successfully clearing all 31 attempts for the Warriors.

Merrimack scored twice during the opening 10 minutes to set the tone early. The Warriors added two more tallies late in the half to take a 4-0 advantage into halftime. The Chargers got on the board midway through the second half when Rider put home a loose ball into an empty cage with 19:10 to play. With just over seven minutes remaining, Collentine potted her first career goal when she deflected a ball from Battino inside the right post. The Chargers outscored the Warriors 2-0 during the second half, however the effort was not enough as Merrimack saw out the 4-2 victory the rest of the way.

The Chargers return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 2 when they travel to Mercy College for a non-conference matchup with the Mavericks beginning at 3:00 p.m.
