PDF RESULTS

WEST HAVEN, Conn. –
The University of New Haven women's tennis team opened up the 2018-19 season with an exciting victory on Wednesday, edging out the Post University Eagles, 4-3 in a non-conference match at the University of New Haven tennis courts.

With the new scoring format for Division II this season, New Haven earned the one available point at doubles by winning best two out of three matches against the Eagles. The Chargers did more than that, however, sweeping doubles action with wins at all three doubles courts. Graduate student Laura Fermosel (Colmenar Viejo, Spain/ÍES Rosa Chacel) and Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) played in their first-ever doubles match together, taking down Dea Lako and Areej Fareh, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 1 doubles. At the No. 2 court, the first-time pair of sophomore Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) and freshman Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) downed Juliana Seabra and Andrea Sandoval, 6-4. Finally, last season's No. 3 doubles combo of senior Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) and junior Nicole Calabrese (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) defeated Sarah Namazi and Jessica Bergen, 6-3.

In singles action, Mika earned the first point for the Blue and Gold, cruising past Seabra at No. 4 singles with back-to-back 6-1 sets. Fermosa earned the second singles win for the Chargers, first edging out Sandoval, 6-4 in the first set before taking command to take the second frame, 6-0. Finishing third was C. Burridge, who clinched the victory for the Chargers with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Bergen at No. 5 singles.

New Haven looks to gain even more momentum on Saturday, September 8 as they open up NE10 action against Bentley. Match time at the University of New Haven tennis courts is slated for 12:00 pm.
