Geaglone Scores Field Hockey's First Goal in Season Opening Setback vs. Pace

WEST HAVEN, Conn. -  The University of New Haven field hockey team put on a strong showing in the first half, but eventually fell to the Pace Setters, 7-1 in the 2018 season opener at DellaCamera Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

New Haven totaled 10 shots on the day, including three shots on goal. The Chargers also racked up nine total penalty corners, just behind Pace's 12. For the goalkeepers, sophomore Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) had nine total saves and freshman Kayla Silva (East Brunswick, N.J./ East Brunswick) collected four. Freshman Taylor Geaglone (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) scored the Charger's lone goal in the second half.

In just over four minutes, New Haven had the game's first shot, as freshman Reilly Bialko's (Shickshinny, Pa./Northwest Area) strike was blocked off of a penalty corner inserted by junior Ashley Higgins (North Hatfield, Mass./Smith Academy). Pace gained possession shortly after, connecting on the game's first goal in the seventh minute. New Haven applied the pressure midway through the first half for ten straight minutes, as Geaglone had the Chargers first shot on goal and a shot that hit the right post, followed by five additional Charger shots and five total penalty corners.  New Haven was able to fight off one last Pace penalty corner as the clock hit zero, when Shaker collected her fifth save of the half.

Pace came out to the second half with fire, scoring four-straight goals in ten minutes to pull away from New Haven. After attempts by freshman Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran) and freshman Julia Battino (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial), Geaglone connected on her first goal wearing the Blue and Gold, hitting a reverse chip off of a pass by Battino from a penalty corner fed by Higgins in the 63rd minute.

New Haven will be back in action in exactly one week (September 15) against Molloy for the season's first road game. Game time against the Lions is slated for 1:00 pm at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford, N.Y.
