NEW HAVEN, Conn. – An 85th minute goal from graduate student
Kledis Capollari (Pogradec, Albania/Guilderland) got the Chargers back within one, but a pair of early goals by Saint Rose was too much to overcome as the New Haven men's soccer team came up short in a 2-1 loss on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore
Alvaro Ezpeleta (Vigo, Spain/Colegio Amor de Dios) picked up his second assist of the season on the Chargers lone tally.
The Golden Knights outshot New Haven 12-10, putting five of those shots on goal to the Chargers two. New Haven drew eight corner kicks, holding Saint Rose to just two corner attempts. The loss is the fourth straight for New Haven, which now sits at 2-5 (0-4 NE10), while Saint Rose moves to 6-2 (2-1 NE10).
Saint Rose took the momentum early with a pair of goals before the midway point of the first half. The first came in the 11th minute with a second-chance goal Filippo Bellu, who took a centering pass in the middle of the box and put a shot on net, which was stopped by defender
Francisco Guedes (Lisbon, Portugal/Maristas de Carcavelos). But, the rebound went right back to Bellu who deposited the rebound low in the middle of the net to give Saint Rose the 1-0 lead.
The Golden Knights added another tally in the 22nd minute when Niv Fogel redirected a pass out to the left, where Hilmar Halldorsson slid a shot along the turf under the outstretched arm of junior
Justin Dansereau (Billerica, Mass./Central Catholic) and into the far corner of the net.
Junior
Eric Layden (Beekman, N.Y./Arlington) made a bid in the 42nd minute, taking a shot from just outside the goal box, but was denied by the keeper who made a leaping stop, knocking it over the bar.
Estanislao Desseno (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Saint Patrick College) took a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box in the 58th minute, but hit shot toward goal sailed wide to the far side. Two minutes later, Guedes sent a shot high, just over the net off a corner kick.
After another close call off a corner kick in the 83rd minute, the Chargers finally broke through off a set piece in the 85th minute. Ezpeleta served a ball into the goal box off a free kick, which was headed into the net by Capollari off a bounce to cut the deficit in half with just over five minutes left in regulation. It was the first goal of Capollari's New Haven career, and the second assist of the season for Ezpeleta.
The Chargers would get one more shot attempt over the final five minutes, but Saint Rose was able to run out the clock to secret the win.
New Haven will return to the pitch this Saturday morning at 11 a.m. with a road trip to Stonehill.
