Field Hockey Pulls off Double Overtime Win at Saint Michael’s

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Sophomore Julia Battino (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) netted the game-winning goal on a penalty stroke in the second overtime to lift the New Haven field hockey team to a thrilling 2-1 victory at Saint Michael's on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Shelby Place (Waterville, Maine/Waterville Senior) scored her first career goal in the win, and sophomore Rebecca Collentine (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) tallied six of the team's 13 shots on goal. Sophomore Taylor Geaglone (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) dished out her third assist of the season in the wining effort, and junior goaltender Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) made 11 stops in net.

The win pushes the Chargers to 5-4 in Northeast-10 Conference play and 5-8 overall, while Saint Michael's drops to 2-10 (1-7 NE10).

The game remained scoreless through the first half before Saint Michael's cracked the scoreboard first in the third quarter, scoring in the 45th minute when Sheagh Fluharty put a shot into the bottom right of the net off a penalty corner for the 1-0 lead.

New Haven clawed back to knot the score with just 1:27 remaining in regulation, breaking through when Geaglone fired a pass from just outside the circle, which was tipped into the right side of the net by Place for the equalizer that forced overtime.

Shaker came up big for the New Haven defense in the first overtime, making six saves in the first overtime, including three over the final 19 seconds of the period. Collentine and Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran) also garnered shots on goal in the period, but all failed to find the back of the net.

After the Chargers put three shot on net in the second overtime, a foul drawn in the 75th minute gave the New Haven a penalty stroke opportunity, which Battino capitalized on, knocking in her team-leading fourth goal of the season to seal the win for New Haven.

The Chargers will return home to face Saint Thomas Aquinas for their next game on Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. at DellaCamera Stadium.
