WEST HAVEN, Conn. – A goal just under three minutes into overtime doomed the New Haven field hockey team in a tough 2-1 loss to Saint Thomas Aquinas on a rainy night at DellaCamera Stadium on Wednesday. Sophomore
Taylor Geaglone's (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) first goal of the season with just under four minutes remaining in regulation sent the game into overtime. Freshman
Katie Durkee (Salem, Conn./East Lyme) picked up her first assist of the season on the tally. The loss drops the Chargers to 5-9 (5-5 NE10), while STAC moves to 6-7 (4-5 NE10).
The Chargers controlled play and picked up a majority of the scoring chances early, with sophomore
Morgan McCarty (Uxbridge, Mass./Uxbridge) getting a shot on goal in the seventh minute. The team registered two additional chances in the eighth minute, but both shots were blocked in front.
Junior
Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) made a crucial save on a clean break-in late in the 16th minute, coming well out off the line to make a sliding save and keep the game scoreless. Shaker followed with another blocker save in the 18th minute, knocking away a potential rebound. She finished the game with six total saves.
With the game still scoreless entering the fourth quarter, STAC cracked the scoreboard just 24 seconds into the period when Briannah Thorne sent a shot from the middle past Shaker to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
After nearly tying the game in the 48th minute off a corner attempt, Geaglone and the Chargers netted the equalizer in the 57th minute off a penalty corner. Durkee took a pass and then found Geaglone in the middle of the circle, who slid the shot past the keeper into the bottom of the goal to draw the score even at 1-1.
For the second straight game, the Chargers went into overtime, but Thorne scored her second goal of the game for the Spartans in the 63rd minute for the sudden victory.
Next up, the Chargers will host No. 9 Southern New Hampshire on Senior Day this Saturday afternoon at DellaCamera Stadium a 1 p.m.
