WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's tennis team (7-5) swept all nine matches on Sunday at the New Haven Tennis Courts to take a 7-0 decision over the visiting Roberts Wesleyan Red Hawks. Prior to the match, the Chargers honored their two seniors;
Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) and
Angela Mercurio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip).
The Chargers opened up the day sweeping all three doubles matches to earn the single point for the overall match decision. Included in the doubles victories was a shutout at second doubles with the combination of junior
Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) and freshman
Kacie Banks (Marietta, Ga./Marietta) not surrendering a set against the Red Hawks' Laura Freeman and Carolyn Graham.
At first doubles, the pair of sophomore
Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) and junior
Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) finished with a 6-2 decision over Bjisha Shrestha and Salome Darsalia, while graduate student
Nicole Calabrese (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and freshman
Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown) earned a 6-1 decision over Sophie Farnholz and Charity Hinman at third doubles.
The Chargers senior duo over Clyne and Mercurio each picked up points on the afternoon with Clyne winning at fifth doubles against Franholz by scores of 6-1, 6-0 and Mercurio taking the sixth singles decision with scores of 6-2, 6-1 over Hinman.
Gonzalez, Mika, Banks and Orlando would all close out the day with a pair of victories. Gonzalez earned her second point of the day at first singles, defeating Freeman 6-2, 6-3. At second singles, Mika would earn a pair of 6-3 decisions over Shrestha, while Banks scored a third singles victory over Darsalia, 6-4, 6-1. Rounding out the action at fourth singles was Orlando who defeated Graham by scores of 6-3, 6-1.
The Chargers will close out their home fall schedule on Friday afternoon when they host a second-straight non-conference opponent in the Saint Thomas Aquinas Spartans. First serve from the New Haven Tennis Courts is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
