WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Another match clinching win by junior
Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) led women's tennis to a 4-3 win over Saint Thomas Aquinas College on Friday afternoon, as the Chargers close the fall 2019 home schedule with a win.
The freshman pairing of
Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown) and
Katherine MacPhail (Park City, Utah/Judge Memorial Catholic) took down their opponents 7-6, 8-6 (tiebreak), but New Haven failed to amass another doubles victory, leaving the fate of the match in the singles contests.
Junior
Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) got the winning started for the Blue and Gold at first singles, taking down her opponent 7-5, 6-3. Freshman
Kacie Banks (Marietta, Ga./Marietta) improved to a team-leading 20-6 record in all competitions with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at fourth singles.
Orlando won her third singles match in the last four contests at the six spot 7-5, 7-6, and 7-4 on a tiebreak for the Chargers third victory on the day, leaving just one more game to decide the winner.
After falling in the first set 3-6, Rodriguez flipped the script with a 6-3 win in set two, forcing a winner take all tiebreak that saw her steal a 6-4 victory, and the Chargers' eighth win on the season.

Women's tennis will close the 2019 regular season Sunday when they play a rescheduled match with Post University at the Edgewood Bath and Tennis Club with first serve set for 1 p.m.
