NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A goal in the 51st minute from freshman
Anna Racine (Whiteford, Md./North Hartford) helped send the New Haven field hockey team past crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State 1-0 on Wednesday. The win marks the first shutout in the program's three-year history, and moves the Chargers to 4-6 overall and back over the .500 mark in Northeast-10 play at 4-3.
The goal was the first career point for Racine, who accounted for five of New Haven's 14 total shots, four of which were on target. Junior
Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) made two saves in goal for her first career shutout.
Both teams remained deadlocked at 0-0 through the first half. The Chargers put four of their five shot attempts on net in the first half, while limiting the Owls to just two shot attempts.
New Haven upped the pressure on the Owls' in the second half, putting six shots on goal over the final 30 minutes. Sophomore
Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran) got an open look front in front with a blistering shot that was stopped by the keeper, and Racine followed one minute later with a shot of her own that was saved.
The Chargers broke through on their next offensive position, as Racine pounced on a loose ball out in front of the cage, and shot it past the goalie through a screen for the game's lone goal.
Paired with a trio of scoring chances over the final eight minutes, the Chargers' defense held the Owls to zero shot attempts in the final quarter to hold on for the win.
Next up, New Haven will hit the road for their final non-conference matchup of the year on Sunday at No. 2 West Chester. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
