NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A late goal by Southern Connecticut in the 88th minute sent the Owls past New Haven 2-1 on Tuesday night at Jess Dow Field on the SCSU campus. Sophomore
Mackenzie Myers (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) scored the Chargers' lone goal, her fourth of the season and second in as many games.
Samantha Roth (Hicksville, N.Y./St. Anthony's) added her third assist of the season.
Southern (8-5-1, 4-3-1 NE10) put 10 shots on goal in the contest, while the Chargers (4-9-1, 3-7-0 NE10) tallied six. New Haven finished the game with a 5-4 edge in corners.
The match remained scoreless through the opening 45 minutes, despite Southern holding a 10-2 advantage in shots.
Tana Tufts (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) collected the first shot of the game for either side just 1:30 into the game, but her attempt was saved.
In goal, junior
Paige Davis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) made five of her eight saves in the first half, including a big sliding stop, coming out off the line to knock the ball away in the 34th minute. She followed with another save, lunging to her right in the 37th minute.
The Owls got the board first in the 59th minute when Kaitlyn D'Amico chipped a shot over the keeper into the top left corner of the net.
Junior
Jenna Peduzzi (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme) nearly tied the game in the 64th minute after taking a pass and breaking clean through the defensive line, but her shot was just tipped by the keeper and deflected off the crossbar.
New Haven broke through to tie it up in the 77th minute when Roth spun to her right and found Myers at the top of the goal box before beating the keeper into the bottom right corner for the equalizer.
The Chargers put together more scoring chances down the stretch, with Peduzzi putting one on goal in 83rd minute, and
Maaike Rahms (Waddinxveen, Netherlands) sliding one just outside of the left post in the 87th minute.
The Owls' followed with the game-winner in the 88th minute when Nadine Hikert capitalized on a bouncing ball in front of the net, headed a high-bounce from just outside the top of the goal box over Davis and into the net.
The Chargers will return home to host American International on Senior Day this Saturday at 1 p.m. The Blue and Gold will recognize the seven members of its 2019 senior class prior to the match.
