Viruet’s Goal Not Enough a Chargers Fall 2-1 to SNHU

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore JP Viruet (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) put the Chargers on top with an 18th minute goal, but a pair of second half tallies from Southern New Hampshire helped the Penmen down the Chargers 3-1 on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Kathy Zolad Stadium. Sophomore Juan Felipe Tobon (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) and senior Nate Peduzzi (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) each assisted on the goal, and senior goalkeeper Stefano Lorusso (Auckland, New Zealand/Sacred Heart College) made seven saves in net for the Blue and Gold.
Viruet's goal was his fourth of the season, moving him into a tie for the team lead in that category.

The Chargers broke through following a couple of early chances in the 18th minute when Tobon sent one in from the edge of the offensive zone to the top of the goal box, where Peduzzi knocked a 50-50 ball away from the keeper in the direction of Viruet, who touched the ball into the wide open goal for the early 1-0 New Haven lead.

Each team had six shots in the first half and Lorusso made three stops in the period to keep the game scoreless into halftime.

SNHU upped the offensive pressure to start the second half and even the score quickly with a blast from just outside the top of the box by Joao Brum in the 54th minute. Sinsia Sprecakovic then netted the game-winner for SNHU in the 69th minute on a shot from the top left corner of the box and tucked it into the bottom right corner of the goal to give the Penmen a 2-1 lead that they would never relinquish.

New Haven had three more scoring chances over the final 11 minutes of the game, including a shot on net by Francisco Guedes (Lisbon, Portugal/Maristas de Carcavelos) from near the top of the box, but were unable to convert.

With three games remaining in the regular season, the Chargers will begin a two-game road swing this Tuesday at 1 p.m. with a trip to Assumption.
