WORCESTER, Mass. – A pair of first half goals, and a penalty kick tally in the second half befell the New Haven men's soccer team in a 3-0 loss at Assumption on Tuesday afternoon.
They Greyhounds (8-6-0, 6-4-0 NE10) held an 8-7 edge in shots on goal and a 7-3 advantage on corners. For New Haven (4-9-1, 2-7-1 NE10),
Nate Peduzzi (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) and
Estanislao Desseno (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Saint Patrick College) each put a pair of shots on goal, and
Imanol Ruiz (Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain/Sagrado Corazon Carmelitas) had three total shots, one of which was on target.
The Hounds wasted no time in getting on the board, striking straight off the opening kickoff just 16 seconds into the match when Kevin Hernandez found the back of the net. Assumption tacked on another goal in the 39th minute for a 2-0 lead.
Holding a two-goal lead coming out of halftime, Assumption added another insurance goal in the 61st minute, drawing a foul in the box. Jason Lages stepped up and buried the ensuing penalty kick into the bottom right corner to up the Greyhound lead to 3-0.
New Haven threatened down the stretch, including in the 72nd minute when Peduzzi sent a long drive from outside the box on goal, but the attempt was tipped over the top of the bar. Ruiz added another New Haven chance in the 80th minute, grabbing a steal just inside the midfield line, running in and sending a shot just over the bar.
The Chargers will head to Le Moyne for their final road match of the season on Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
