WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Behind a balanced attack on offense, the New Haven women's volleyball team cruised to its first three-set sweep in Northeast-10 Conference play, defeating the visiting Southern New Hampshire Penmen on Saturday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium.
Leading the Chargers attack on the day was sophomore
Ruby Fera (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) who was the only player in the match to finish in double figures with 10 kills while she closed out the afternoon hitting .346 suffering just one miscue in 26 total attempts. Additionally, Fera finished among the defensive leaders with seven digs.
Joining Fera on leading the Chargers attack was junior middle blocker
Camille Garden (Atlanta, Ga./Landmark Christian) who finished with eight kills while senior outside hitter
Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) chipped in with a half dozen. Overall, six different players contributed to 36 total kills for the Blue and Gold.
As a team, New Haven hit .245 for the match with Fera, Gaden and freshman
Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) all finishing the afternoon hitting plus-.300. Following Fera was Garden who hit .333 while Barry dropped in five kills and suffered a single error in 13 attempts for a .308 average. The Chargers six-two setter rotation of junior
Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) and freshman
Sammie Paguia (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) led New Haven to a hot hitting afternoon. Chan would lead the setting duo with 18 assists while Paguia added a baker's dozen, 13.
Defensively, New Haven was led by its rookie libero
Julia Guarniere (Milford, N.H./Milford) who finished with 13 digs while junior Kali Greahead added a dozen to wrap up the only two Chargers in double figures. The Chargers defense held the Penmen to a .043 attack percentage as a team as they collected 27 kills but suffered 22 errors.
New Haven doesn't return to the court until the month of November when they head to the Granite State on Friday, November 1 to take on the Saint Anselm Hawks.
