SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman
Jon Calvo (Vitoria, Spain/Olabide Ikastola) scored the game-tying goal for New Haven with 34 seconds left in regulation, but the Chargers men's soccer team fell 3-2 in double overtime at Le Moyne on Saturday afternoon. The golden goal ended a wild game in which both teams scored in the first 12 minutes, and Le Moyne scored what looked to be the winning tally with 1:01 left in regulation, only to see Calvo retie the game 35 seconds later to force overtime. Senior
Nate Peduzzi (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) took over the team lead with his fifth goal of the season early in the first half, and
Alessandro Pappalardo (Rome, Italy/Stamford) picked up the assist on Calvo's late marker.
Le Moyne jumped in front just 1:01 into the match when Tom Henne headed home a rebound after an initial save to give the Dolphins a quick 1-0 lead.
Peduzzi provided the Chargers' answer 10 minutes later in the 12th minute, tapping home his own rebound on the goal line after his initial shot from in close was saved.
The match stayed deadlocked until the 89th minute when the Dolphins netted the go-ahead goal following a breakaway down the left side, which was sent into the middle and wrapped around the goalkeeper into the left side of the net.
Calvo and the Chargers answered right off the ensuing restart, as Pappalardo sent a ball across the box from the right side to Calvo, who hammered it home from five yards out with 36 seconds remaining to retie the score 2-2 and force overtime.
Neither team registered a shot through the first 15 minutes of extra time until Le Moyne scored the golden goal in the 106th minute, taking advantage of a misplayed ball in the box, which led to the game-winning tally getting sent into the wide-open net.
The Chargers will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. when they take on Bentley at Kathy Zolad Stadium.
