Field Hockey Blanked 3-0 in Road Matchup at Pace

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The New Haven field hockey team came up on the short end of a 3-0 loss at Pace on Tuesday. Pace outshot New Haven 16-10 in the game, while the Chargers held a 10-5 edge in shots in the second half. Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran) tallied three shots for the Chargers (5-12, 5-8 NE10), and Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) made seven saves in goal for the Blue and Gold.

Pace (5-11, 5-9 NE10) jumped on the board first in the seventh minute off a scramble in front following a penalty corner. After an initial stop by Shaker, Danielle Merante grabbed her own rebound and lofted a shot into the top left corner from in close to give the Setters an early 1-0 lead.

Pace tacked on another goal off a penalty stroke just under five minutes later for a 2-0 lead in the 13th minute, and carried the two-goal edge into halftime.

The Chargers put a pair of shots on goal in the opening minute of the third quarter, but were unable to find the back of the net. Pace broke through once again on their ensuing possession as Merante scored her second of the game in the 32nd minute to give the Setters a 3-0 lead.

New Haven put two more on goal late in the third, including one off a penalty corner in the closing seconds of the frame, but the last-second attempt was blocked.

The Chargers held Pace scoreless over the final 28 minutes of the game and outshot the Setters 10-5 in the second half, earning all six of their shots on goal in the final 30 minutes. Rider had three shots in the second half, with her best opportunity coming in the 56th minute, but was robbed by a defensive save.

New Haven will conclude the regular season at home this Friday night at 7 p.m. against Bentley, and with a win will still have a chance to qualify for the final spot in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Championship Tournament.
