Jenna Peduzzi (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme) in the 87th minute helped the New Haven women's soccer team rally for a 2-2 draw against Assumption on Wednesday. Junior
Samantha Roth (Hicksville, N.Y./St. Anthony's) also scored for New Haven in the 18th minute to give the Chargers an early lead. Junior
Paige Davis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) made seven saves in goal for New Haven (4-10-2, 3-8-1 NE10), while Peduzzi led the way offensively with seven total shots, five of which were on target.
Assumption (7-4-3, 4-4-3 NE10) outshot New Haven 30-19, however the Chargers succeeded in putting 10 shots on goal to the Greyhounds nine. The Chargers also held a 6-5 edge in corners.
Roth put New Haven on the board late in the 18th minute following a throw in, dribbling the ball into the box and sending it across into the top right corner of the net for her fifth tally of the season.
Assumption netted the equalizer late in the half, tying the game in the 40th minute as Emily McDonald took a centering pass in the middle of the box and slid it along the ground into the bottom left corner.
The Hounds then took their first lead of the contest early in the second half, netting the go-ahead marker in the 52nd minute when Brooke Shatney scored on a ball that was played in from the left side of the box.
The Chargers garnered a couple of scoring opportunities throughout the second half, including a long shot from well outside the box by
Kaitlyn Price (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity Regional), that short-hopped the goalkeeper and ricocheted just wide of the left post in the 67th minute.
Gabriela Chavez (Chicopee, Mass./Chicopee Comprehensive) also had a good look from in close blocked away in the 70th minute.
Peduzzi broke the stalemate to bring the Chargers back even with her 87th minute tally, taking a feed in the box and after her initial shot was saved, collected her own rebound, and sent a low shot past the keeper into the goal to tie the score 2-2. The goal was her team-leading eighth of the season.
Each team put one shot on goal during the first overtime, including an attempt from Peduzzi in the 96th minute, but neither found the back of the net. New Haven also had a potential game-winning goal disallowed in the 93rd minute by an offside call. The Chargers grabbed one last chance for a golden goal in the second stanza, but had a shot blocked, and then shot the ensuing rebound wide.
New Haven will conclude the 2019 season next Tuesday, Nov. 5 at Saint Rose, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
