Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Chargers Fall 2-0 in Strong Defensive Effort against No. 8 Assumption

WEST HAVEN, Conn . – Despite a strong defensive effort from the New Haven field hockey team, a pair of second half goals sent eighth ranked Assumption past New Haven 2-0 on a rainy Wednesday afternoon. Junior goaltender Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) made 15 saves in the game for New Haven.

The Chargers defense held strong throughout the first half, with Shaker making two sensational diving saves as part of her 11 stops in the opening 30 minutes, keeping the game scoreless going into halftime.

Sophomore Rebecca Collentine (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) delivered the first shot the game for either side, putting an attempt on goal in the fourth minute, which was turned aside.

Assumption appeared to crack the scoreboard in the 21st minute, but a shot into the top of the net was overturned.

Shaker answered by making a kick save off a corner attempt in the 23rd minute, and followed with two straight sensational saves, one coming on a break away, and a second on a one-timer in the 26th minute.

With the score deadlocked, the Hounds broke through in the 39th minute when Deirdre Burchill knocked home a rebound off an initial shot from the top of the circle. Assumption later added an insurance goal 51st minute when Isabel Primack netted an unassisted tally from the right side that found its way through Shaker and into the far corner of the net.

Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran) and Anna Racine (Whiteford, Md./North Hartford) both looked to draw the Chargers even over the final seven minutes of play, but shot attempts from each failed to go on target.

New Haven will travel to Saint Michael's for their next matchup this Saturday at noon, before returning to DellaCamera Stadium next Wednesday to face Saint Thomas Aquinas.
