Garden Drills Career-High 17 Kills as Chargers Drop Five Set Thriller at Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior middle Camille Garden (Atlanta, Ga./Landmark Christian) drilled a career-high 17 kills as the New Haven volleyball team dropped a five-set decision to fourth seeded Saint Anselm in the quarterfinal round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship. The Hawks will advance to face top seeded Bentley in the semifinal round.

Garden was one of two players to finish in double figures as senior right side Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) added 12 kills to the Chargers offense. Among the two leading hitters, Garden led the pair and the whole team with a .500 attack percentage with her 17 kills coming on 28 attempts with three errors. Following Garden and Nowicki in leading the Chargers attack was freshman Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) and sophomore Ruby Fera (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) who dropped in nine and seven kills, respectively.

As a team, New Haven finished the night hitting .152 with a combined 50 kills. Facilitating that offense was the setting duo of junior Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) and freshman Sammie Paguia (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge). Chan led the pair with 18 assists while Paguia finished with 17 and both would combine that with their defense to close out the night with a double double.

Leading the defense overall was freshman libero Julia Guarniere (Milford, N.H./Milford) who finished with 22 digs, one of five different players to finish with double digits. In addition to Chan (15 digs) and Paguia (10), junior Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) and Fera joined them with 17 and 14 digs, respectively.

New Haven also combined for nine total blocks and 11 service aces with Garden leading the blocking efforts with five total blocks and Paguia leading in unreturned serves with a trio of aces. Also among the blocking leaders was Nowicki, Barry and Jalynn Finnie (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) who each finished with three.

On the other side of the eight-team bracket, third seeded Stonehill swept Le Moyne, while sixth seeded American International fought off a tough battle from seventh seeded Franklin Pierce to win in four sets.

New Haven will now await the decision of the NCAA on a potential at-large bid to the NCAA Division II East Region Championship which will take place December 5-7 at a site to be determined. The Chargers are in search of their 34th appearance, and 14th straight, in the national tournament. The NCAA Selection Show is scheduled for Monday, November 25 at 7:30 p.m. and will air live on NCAA.com.
